A PRACTICAL FIELD GUIDE TO GETTING DRESSED

Editorial standards

How we compare clothing.

A comparison is only useful when readers can see what was considered, what is known and what remains uncertain.

Our practical framework

  1. Fit information: whether a listing supplies a size chart, garment measurements or a clear description of the cut.
  2. Material details: whether fibre composition and relevant construction details are disclosed.
  3. Care requirements: whether the care label or manufacturer guidance is available.
  4. Use and versatility: the settings and combinations a garment may reasonably suit, described as guidance rather than a universal fact.
  5. Transparency: whether material details, seller identity, pricing terms and policies are easy to find on the original listing.

What the framework does not mean

It is not a laboratory test, an independent certification, a claim of hands-on testing or a guarantee of quality. A product may be difficult to compare if the manufacturer has not published enough information. We will not invent missing specifications, user reviews, prices, ratings or awards.

Sources and updates

For item-specific facts, the preferred source is the current manufacturer or retailer listing and its size, composition and care information. General clothing guidance should be treated as a starting point and checked against the actual garment. Third-party information can become outdated; verify it before relying on it.
